I’m starting the countdown now. The Saks flagship store on Fifth Avenue is opening a whole new shoe floor in August! That’s 8,500 square feet of shopping heaven — a 35% expansion from the current shoe department — so vast that it is getting its own zip code and commemorative stamps. (Gimmicky I know…) It’s as exciting as when Harvey Nicks finally opened a shoe department in the late ’90s, just as I was moving from London, I should note. Can you imagine, Harvey Nicks with without its fabulous shoes? The typically more daring and edgier designers showed pretty tame and mellow collections for Fall 2011. Aside from Chalayan’s LED-operated, light-up dress, Yohji’s LV logo knock-off and twirling skirts, and Margiela’s extreme 80’s silhouettes, the usual in-your-face designers seemed a tad bit lethargic this season.
-Queen of the avant garde, Comme des Garcons’ Rei Kawakubo told Style.com that she is “tired of mundane, everyday fashion.” Since when was she ever a conformist? CDG’s show started with adorable, light, springy(?), dresses in lilac, pink and grey with tiny baby dresses sewn onto their fronts. Others had puffy flowers and bows sewn on them.
